When Is the Best Time of Year to Replace Your Roof?

5/14/2024

When You Should Replace Your RoofAs your home ages, it’s inevitable that the roof will need to be replaced.

Most roofs will need to be replaced every 20 to 30 years. In areas with inclement weather, storms, hurricanes, high winds, winter freezes, or severe weather, the roof may need to be replaced more often to ensure the safety and security of your home and family.

When to Replace Your Roof

If you are considering a roof replacement, there are a few things you should keep in mind as you plan.

The Availability of a Trained Roofer

You should always have a trained, professional roofer to handle the replacement roof work. It’s a complex and potentially dangerous job, and your home is at risk if there’s a problem. Rather than go with the roofer who has the most availability, use a roofer that you can trust. For some roofers, this may mean that there is limited availability. The roofer may be booked out for a few months, so schedule early, before you run into a problem with the roof and need immediate help.

Climate Considerations

Roof work can be done any time of year, but you should consider the frequency of poor weather. Depending on your climate and geography, some seasons may be problematic for roof work. For example, in northern areas, drastically cold weather and high winds can make work difficult. Frequent rains and storms will also delay work.

Fall Roofing Work

Fall is often considered the best time of year to replace a roof. Fall typically has cooler weather and less rain, but it’s also very popular for scheduling roof replacements. Keep that in mind if you want to plan roofing work in the Fall.

Winter Roofing Work

You can book roofing replacement work in winter, and roofing companies are typically less busy so making an appointment is easier. However, in some climates high winds, heavy snow, and freezing temperatures can make work problematic. Some materials can be damaged in winter weather. Use a professional, trained roofer who can advise you when work can be done in winter’s cold.

Spring Roofing Work

Many homeowners like to schedule roofing work in Spring, making it part of spring cleaning or a home renovation. Some climates will see inclement weather in Spring, such as heavy rains in Florida or damaging wind and storms in the Central states. You and your roofer should keep an eye on the weather before starting work to avoid any problems.

Summer Roofing Work

The warm summer months and stable weather make summer an appealing season to schedule roof work. However, summer can also provide weather surprises like heavy rain, damaging storms, and extremely hot temperatures. Summer is also very popular for contract construction work like roofing, which can limit availability.

Scheduling Work for Your Roof

While work on your roof can be scheduled at any time of year, you should plan the work when it’s convenient for you and your family and when the roofer you trust is available. Once your appointment is booked, rely on the expertise of the roofer to know when work should be done to minimize problems. Contact your local Certainteed dealer if you have questions.
