Tips for Protecting Your Roof in Spring

3/19/2024

tips for protecting your roofYour roof keeps your home and family safe. While it’s essential to conduct regular maintenance and protect it year-round, it’s especially important in spring.

Steps for Roof Maintenance

After the harsh winter months, spring can bring storms and heavy rain to many parts of the country. Ignoring your roof in spring can lead to major problems. Even minor damage that occurs in winter can lead to significant and costly issues in spring. Let’s look at a few common-sense tips that can save you money and increase the safety and protection of your home.

Conduct a Visual Roof Inspection

For many, birds chirping and warm, sunny spring weather means it’s time for spring cleaning after the long and dreary winter months. It’s also the perfect time to do a maintenance check on the roof. Do a quick but safe visual inspection of the roof for any damaged shingles or gutter damage. Look for debris or clogged gutters. Take time to inspect the downspouts closely. Vents, flashing, and skylights should also be inspected well

Schedule Regular Spring Maintenance Checks

It’s also a good idea to schedule a professional inspection. The roofing company can handle minor repairs, including replacing damaged shingles or fixing the flashing. A professional inspection can also find any other problems. Ice dams that form on the roof in winter can damage its structure. These should be corrected as soon as possible. The heavy rains during spring can lead to roof rot or mold if there is any unforeseen damage or hidden roof leaks.

Clean and Clear the Roof

Take a few minutes to clear up any debris on the roof, like tree limbs, twigs, leaves, or debris. Be careful to avoid throwing debris in the gutters. While removing limbs and debris, clear out the gutters and flush the downspouts. Check the joints of the gutters to make sure there aren’t holes. As with any work on the roof, make sure to be careful and safe.

Prune and Clear Away Trees

Spring means abundant growth of trees and plants, which is good! But, it can pose a risk to your roof from falling limbs or shingle damage. Cut back the limbs that overhang the roof and risk falling during a spring storm. Keep in mind that limbs grow, so prune them back far enough that they have room to spread throughout the summer. If you have questions or concerns about pruning trees and your roof, then consult a professional roofer who can answer questions and provide guidance.

Proactive Spring Roof Maintenance

Regular roof maintenance is critical to reducing roof damage and high repair or replacement costs. In addition, spring and fall are the best times to schedule roof maintenance.

As the days grow warmer and you start planning your spring cleaning, be sure to include a roof inspection and minor repairs. Contact your local CertainTeed roofing contractor if you have questions or need to consult or schedule any repair work.
