Roof Snow Warning from Firefighters

As Virginia digs out from Winter Storm Jonas, firefighters warn about potential dangers of heavy snow on roofs. A snow covered roof can look quite nice, but if too much snow accumulates, this picturesque scene can be the cause of serious problems to your home. Fire departments in some parts of Virginia are issuing warnings to homeowner to keep an eye on snow accumulation on roofs, and to beware of potential dangers. Some warning signs of snow-related issues are:

  • Sagging beams, ceilings, and structural supports
  • Doors that don’t fit their frames or no longer shut correctly
  • New cracks in walls or ceilings
  • Unexplained cracking or popping noises

If you experience any of these signs in your home, you should immediately seek professional help from a structural engineer. If things get bad enough, you should evacuate your home and contact emergency services.

Officials do NOT recommend cleaning the snow off your roof yourself because of the potential f or falls and other injuries. Only roofing professionals should remove ice and snow from roofing.
