Pros and Cons of DIY Roof ReplacementReplacing a roof can be expensive.

If you need to replace a roof and you have time and savvy, it can be tempting to save all that money and do it yourself. However, you need to be aware of the risks to ensure the project not only saves you cash but keeps you and your family safe.

Evaluating Your Options for Replacing a Roof

The first step in deciding if you can or should replace your roof yourself is to evaluate the roofing material.

A shingle roof is not overly difficult or complex to replace, but other materials like slate or metal can be increasingly challenging and should be left to the professionals.

Other things to consider before deciding you can safely replace your roof:

  • The slope and structure of the roof will also impact the difficulty of the project. Can you easily and safely navigate the roof? Look at the yard around the house. Is there flat space with good soil conditions for using a ladder?

  • Consider the weather. Wind, rain, or extreme heat can significantly increase the challenge of replacing a roof.

  • Make sure you have the tools and expertise you’ll need for the project. You’ll need safety and fall protection equipment like a hard hat, harness, rope, and a way to anchor the safety line. You’ll also need a hoist to safely lift building materials to the roof. Ladders and good work clothes like gloves and rubber boots are necessary. Roofing nailers, hammers, saws, measuring tape, and other basic tools should be available.

  • You’ll also need to safely remove any debris, like old roofing materials and shingles with a dumpster.

  • Check to see if you need a building permit for the work.

The Basics of Replacing a Roof

Now that you’ve decided to replace the roof, let’s look at the basic tasks that are required in the project.

  1. Remove the old roof and replace any damaged areas. This could include rotted or water-damaged wood. Install new vents or other roofing structures. Make sure your attic has enough ventilation.
  1. Install the underlayment. The underlayment used will depend on the weather and regulations in your region.
  1. Install flashing. Flashing is used to protect areas of the roof that are prone to leaks.
  1. Install the shingles. Use the correct nails, and only nail in the designated area on the shingle.
  1. Apply roofing sealant where needed.

Please keep in mind that each of these steps will involve more work, but this provides a starting background on the tasks that must be completed when replacing a roof.

Before Starting a DIY Replacement Roof Project

Even if the individual steps involved in replacing a roof seem simple, this is a complex project. There is a safety risk with the work. Mistakes can lead to negative consequences, up to and including structural damage to the home.

If you have any doubt about your ability to complete the work, contact a CertainTeed professional in your area. They can evaluate the work, provide an honest estimate of costs and schedule, and ensure you and your home are protected.
