    What is an Energy Star Rating and Why Does It Matter?


    If a material has qualified for an Energy Star rating, that material receives an Energy Star label. Roofing products that have an Energy Star rating have been proven to save a measureable amount of energy. An Energy Star rating is important to both consumers and businesses, as more energy efficient homes and businesses require less spending for heating and cooling and can result in sizeable savings. Americans spend $40 billion annually on air conditioning alone, which makes up one-sixth of the electricity generated in the United States (Source). We could make great strides in reducing overall energy needs if we were to use Energy Star products together with other Energy Star improvements such as insulation, windows, and HVAC equipment.


    What is required to qualify for an Energy Star rating?

    Building materials have to meet certain specifications set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to qualify for an Energy Star rating. The following key principles guide these specifications:

    • Product categories must contribute significant energy savings nationwide.

    • Certified products must deliver the features and performance demanded by consumers, in addition to increased energy efficiency.

    • If the certified product costs more than a conventional, less-efficient counterpart, purchasers will recover their investment in increased energy efficiency through utility bill savings, within a reasonable period of time.

    • Energy efficiency can be achieved through broadly available, non-proprietary technologies offered by more than one manufacturer.

    • Product energy consumption and performance can be measured and verified with testing.

    • Labeling would effectively differentiate products and be visible for purchasers.


    Solar reflectiveness and how it affects energy

    During warmer months, solar reflectance is the most important factor for roofing materials (source). Reflective roofing materials redirect light and heat to reduce roof temperature, and more reflective materials redirect more heat and light. An Energy Star roof could reduce the cooling demand for an individual building owner by 10-15 percent (source).
