The Real Facts of Animal Damage and Your Roof
5/3/2021
You probably already know that things like bad weather, falling branches from trees, and even normal wear and tear can do serious damage your roof. But did you know that animals can also wreak havoc on your roof and cause extensive (not to mention expensive) problems?
If a critter damages your roof, you’ll need to call a roofing professional to make the repairs. But why wait until it happens? Instead, protect your roof now from animal damage.
How animals damage roofs
Rats, racoons, birds, squirrels, and bats are the most common critters to invade roofs. They start by entering soffits and then often remove shingles and bore through wood. Once they create a large enough opening, water can enter the roof, and this can lead to water damage in your home.
Additionally, animals can damage wiring systems, venting, and your gutters as well. In fact, if bird nests clog your gutter’s downspouts it can lead to a water backup that can create water damage. And sometimes critters lay nests and even die behind walls, which can lead to foul smelling odors (and a call to the exterminator).
How to prevent animal damage in roofs
First, take a walk around your house on a regular basis and notice any animal droppings or other signs that animals are in the area. You should also inspect your gutters and downspouts and remove any bird nests. Then, look in the attic for damage to the walls, especially in the corners near the ceiling.
You’ll also want to remove any branches that are hanging over the house, so animals can’t climb on the roof easily.
